Ciena expands packet network portfolio

Network specialist Ciena has today launched several additions to its packet network solutions portfolio, designed to help operators accelerate the adoption of 10GbE services.

The new solutions are designed to change the economics of metro packet aggregation, and deliver cost, power and footprint benefits to operators as 10GbE becomes the norm.

Ciena has noted a significant increase in demand for capacity, and believes its additional services – the 5260 and 5142 service aggregation switches – will allow operators to deploy robust platforms that enable high-speed, efficient data delivery.

“Operators are evolving their networks to keep pace with the need for high-speed, high-capacity Ethernet services,” said Francois Locoh-Donou, SVP of global products group at Ciena.

“By offering operators packet networking solutions that combine all of these features, we’re carving out a new space where cost-effective, carrier-class platforms can have a significant impact on costs, while still providing a carrier-class solution.”

The services can reportedly be deployed alongside Ciena’s other network solutions, and Rosemary Cochran, principal analyst at Vertical Systems Group, believes Ciena’s services will help to answer the issues surrounding metro aggregation.

“Our research shows that 10Gbps and higher-speed installations are the fastest-growing Carrier Ethernet services overall,” Cochran said.

“Service providers face many capex and opex decisions as they upgrade their infrastructures to meet this rising demand. Ciena’s approach to deploying a cost-optimised platform such as the 5160 addresses the challenges of metro aggregation, while also enabling new gigabit Ethernet service offerings.”

In August this year, Ciena partnered with Italian infrastructure and service provider Retelit to upgrade its network.
