India’s BSNL and MTNL strike infrastructure partnership

State-run Indian carriers Bharat Sanchar Nigam (BSNL) and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam (MTNL) have signed an agreement today to share infrastructure and offer joint services to corporate customers.

BSNL operates a range of telecoms services in 20 of India’s 22 telecommunications zones, while MTNL is largely focussed in Delhi and Mumbai. Both companies have been hit by intense competition from the private sector in recent years.

With market share and revenue eroding, the companies will share assets including buildings, mobile masts and long-distance phone networks as a way to reduce costs.
