Airtel to launch 3G services in Bangladesh in October

Mobile operator Airtel has said it will launch 3G services in Dhaka and Chittagong, Bangladesh in October this year.

Airtel was one of four mobile operators in Bangladesh to secure a 3G licence, following the country’s long-awaited spectrum auction earlier this month.

“We are going to launch 3G services from October in some parts of Dhaka and Chittagong,” Chris Tobit, CEO of Airtel’s Bangladesh unit, confirmed to local reporters. “In November, subscribers from Sylhet [north east Bangladesh] will get the service.”

Tobit hopes that all three cities will be fully covered by the end of the year and does not expect the upgrade to disrupt existing services for its customers.

Rival operators Grameenphone and Robi have reportedly also announced 3G service launches for October, but Tobit is seemingly unconcerned by the competition.

“I think we can provide the best 3G service in the country,” he said.
