US operator Verizon has expanded 100G coverage on its long-haul network in the US and Europe by adding the system to over 4,800 miles of its global IP network during the first half of 2013. The expansion includes almost 4,500 miles of the US Verizon network and brings the company's total deployment of 100G in the country to approximately 21,400 miles. [read more]  



 

SK Telecom has announced that it is to launch an LTE roaming service throughout Japan, in collaboration with SoftBank. The agreement allows for subscribers to roam in Japan and Korea on the LTE networks of both companies, with SK Telecom subscribers using LTE/LTE-Advanced services able to access similar data communications speeds over SoftBank's network in Japan. Cable & Wireless Communications (CWC), acting under its LIME brand, is to launch a 4G LTE network in the Cayman Islands. The network will reportedly be the first in the region, and is part of CWC's company-wide strategy to deliver enhanced mobile data services across its pan-American businesses. [read more]



 

Communications infrastructure company Arqiva has completed the build-out of a data superhighway through a new fibre network from Virgin Media Business. The network connects up to 40 sites in the UK, with Virgin Media Business claiming it provides a super-fast delivery service for broadcast and mobile customers. [read more]



 

Ecuador's Corporación Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (CNT) has signed an agreement with Alcatel-Lucent for the French vendor to deploy the first 4G LTE mobile broadband network in the south American country. The deal follows a successful trial earlier this year, which demonstrated download speeds of up to 100Mbps, and is hoped to address the growing demand for bandwidth from smartphone applications. Level 3 Communications has expanded its Vyvx broadcast capabilities into South Africa in a bid to meet growing demand for video content generated and delivered into the country. Companies in South Africa will now be able to stream live sports, breaking news and other video content to international audiences. [read more]



 

Telefónica has started deploying its 4G LTE network in Spain, through collaborations with Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson. The project, estimated to be one of the largest in Western Europe, will see Alcatel-Lucent and Ericsson implement LTE infrastructure in 2,200 nodes this year. [read more]



 

Orange has announced that it has extended 4G coverage to all areas of Paris, with plans to further increase its offering across France, ahead of schedule. The company also said it is planning to roll out the service to 70 cities and surrounding urban areas by the end of September, including over 500 towns. [read more]



 

Carrier neutral provider Epsilon and Myanmar-based YTP have struck a partnership in the country to deliver local data access services. The agreement is expected to increase access to data services for commercial buildings in the country and deliver international connectivity to local and foreign businesses entering the market. World Telecom Labs (WTL) has announced that Zamir Telecom is to begin using its VoIP optimisation equipment to improve the service on its London to Dhaka route. The company's managed VoIP service between the two cities runs on a dedicated fibre link, with traffic peaking at 20 million minutes a day. [read more]
