Telekom Austria and KPN have signed a strategic wholesale partnership for the development of a Europe-wide fibre network. The deal is designed to incorporate the interconnection of Ethernet, IP VPN, wavelength and IPT services to increase the companies’ joint presence in Europe, as well as maximise large amounts of traffic. Technology provider Exponential-e has announced the launch of 10Gbps cloud connectivity in 12 UK data centres. The company will reportedly deliver 10G connectivity over its 100G core network spanning the UK, in order to meet increasing customer demand. [read more]


 

Verizon has announced it has successfully completed a field trial by demonstrating the ability to double the capacity of fibre using 200G technology on its long-haul network between New York and Boston. The US carrier said it proved the ability to double spectral efficiency while reducing the cost per bit compared with 100G technology, which is the fastest speed presently available on its network. Australia’s Telstra and Swedish equipment provider Ericsson have completed a successful LTE-Advanced (LTE-A) trial on combined 1800MHz and 900MHz spectrum bands. The trial, which the companies claim to be a world first on a commercial network, was carried out on July 31 this year in Queensland, Australia. [read more]




 

Digital software vendor Infinera and DANTE (Delivery of Advanced Network Technology to Europe) have together achieved a Guinness World Record for the fastest rate of provisioning multi-Terabit optical capacity across the GÉANT network. The two companies installed and activated 8Tbps of long-haul, super channel optical capacity on the network, which equates to simultaneously streaming 1.6 million HD films in both directions. Limelight Networks has extended its reach into India with the launch of a PoP in Mumbai. The company has targeted India as an important market for its services and will also begin the sale of its digital presence platform, Limelight Orchestrate, in the country. [read more]


 

South Africa’s Neotel has announced it will launch its LTE network in the country on August 21 2013. The date falls in line with expectations made in May this year, and goes against criticism received by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) for not making sufficient spectrum available. BICS is launching its business intelligence tool, SMART Webvision, to monitor and track 2G, 3G and 4G roaming traffic. SMART stands for Subscriber Management and Advanced Reporting Tool, and it will also support LTE Diameter, LTE Data and GPRS Roaming Exchange network technologies. [read more]


 

Hurricane Electric has established a PoP at NXDATA’s data centre in Bucharest, Romania. The NXDATA-1 is Romania’s first carrier neutral data centre and, according to reports, is considered one of the most significant business centres in northern Bucharest. [read more]
