Lightower extends US fibre network to Washington and Virginia

Lightower Fibre Networks has today announced a 1,500 mile expansion of its US fibre network into Washington DC and Virginia.

Lightower began the construction of 1,100 route miles covering Virginia and North Carolina in May 2012, and its metro network now covers an additional 400 route miles in the Washington DC area.

The network also covers parts of southern Maryland and the company expects the expansion to enhance its position as a major service provider in the region.

“Lightower will continue to aggressively invest and expand in this region, all in response to the tremendous demand we are seeing here,” said Rob Shanahan, CEO of Lightower.

“Our high-performance networking solutions power some of the largest companies and most demanding applications in the world, and now we are bringing more of this networking power to Washington.”

Cities covered by the expansion include Washington DC, Bethesda (MD), Silver Spring (MD), Arlington (VA), Alexandria (VA), Richmond (VA), Reston (VA), Herndon (VA), Ashburn (VA), Newport News (VA), Fredericksburg (VA) and Elizabeth City (NC).

The expansion is also expected to deliver fibre connectivity to area data centres in Ashburn, Culpepper, Richmond and Washington DC, which are frequented by technology companies, cloud and content distributors and government applications.

In January this year, Lightower announced plans for a merger with Sidera Networks in a potential $2 billion agreement.
