Vodafone launches Wellington LTE network

Vodafone New Zealand has today launched 4G services in the country’s capital, Wellington.

Vodafone’s 4G LTE network, thought to be 10 times faster than the existing 3G service, is up and running in Auckland, Christchurch, Queenstown, Wanaka, Taupo and Lake Brunner. Trials for the latter were held in April this year.

Russel Stanners, CEO of Vodafone New Zealand, said: “With 4G available to over 30% of Wellington’s population today – including the central city and Lower Hutt – rising to more than 50% in September, there’s even more opportunity for Wellingtonians and visitors to experience the speed of 4G.”

Users of the 4G service in the city are expected to benefit from notably faster upload and download speeds, as well as high definition movie streaming on the move.

“Now you can use 4G when you’re riding the cable car, getting a taste of Wellywood at the Weta Cave movie museum, or simply enjoying a stroll around the city,” Stanners added.

Vodafone is reportedly targeting Palmerston North, in New Zealand’s North Island, for the next stage of its roll-out.
