Helios Towers acquires Vodacom’s tower network in Tanzania

Helios Towers Tanzania (HTT), subsidiary of African telecoms towers company Helios Towers Africa (HTA), has officially acquired the entirety of Vodacom Group’s tower network in Tanzania.

The deal, thought to be Vodacom’s first tower transaction in the country, will see the company’s 1,149 telecoms towers transfer to HTT.

HTT’s tower coverage in Tanzania will more than double as a result of the transaction, and the company has committed to a short-term roll-out expected to notably increase its points of service.

Under terms of the agreement, Vodacom will acquire a 2.5% share in HTT, and lease back some of the infrastructure subject to a long-term contract.

“HTA is proud to be chosen by Vodacom as its partner for the ownership and management of its existing infrastructure and as the solution provider for its future roll-out,” said Chuck Green, CEO at HTA.

“This is a ground-breaking move for Vodacom and their equity investment is a significant endorsement of HTA’s reputation, management team and operating track record.”

The deal is still subject to regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.

Earlier this year Vodacom Tanzania launched an LTE trial in Dar es Salaam in partnership with Nokia Siemens Networks.
