TeliaSonera purchases fibre networks to increase home market coverage

Scandinavian telecoms operator TeliaSonera is to acquire fibre-optic networks in the Nordic and Baltic regions to help augment its range of services and boost quality within its home markets.

Tough competition is said to be one of the main reasons for the company’s latest activities, Reuters reports.

In an attempt to attract customers from rivals such as Tele2 and Telenor, it is hoped that bigger capacity and network quality will increase profits and revenues, the latter of which has remained flat since 2008. It’s net sales 0.4% while its core profit is 8.9billion Swedish Krona ($1.35 billion).

“Network quality and capacity are crucial to meet the exploding demand for data; therefore we will further invest in 4G and mobile coverage, expand within fibre and selectively target acquisitions of existing fibre networks in our home markets,” said a spokesman for the company .

Earlier this month TeliaSonera and PLDT (Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company) signed a global IP transit service agreement to help PLDT enter previously untapped markets.
