The company hopes the connections will boost its reach and presence in West Africa, complimenting existing SAT-3 capacity.
It claims the connection to Nambia is the first time the nation has been linked to a subsea cable system, with the connection being implemented by the company’s local partner, Internet Technologies Namibia (ITN).
“This is an important strategic step in our African expansion plans, having acquired significant capacity on the 5.12Tbps undersea fibre optic cable,” said Sean Nourse, executive of connectivity services at IS.
As well as offering existing IS customers greater diversity up the west coast of Africa, the company hopes the connections will attract other companies in the region to access its data centre network in both South Africa and Europe.
“This enables us to offer companies a variety of services and applications that were not always practical in the past due to bandwidth constraints such as IP-based communication, including VoIP and video conferencing, as well as content sharing, collaboration tools, e-commerce and centralised cloud computing services,” said Nourse.
The company has identified Ghana and Angola as other potential markets to connect to WACS.
Earlier this year, Epsilon signed an interconnection agreement with WACS to allow customer’s access to 450 operators on its platform.
