GTS upgrades CEE network to 100G

GTS is partnering with Ciena to upgrade its Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) network to 100G.

The carrier has deployed Ciena’s converged packet optical solution on routes in Poland, the Czech Republic and Germany, which is said to be able to provide 100G capacity over distances of 1,400km.

Sunny Kumar, vice president of marketing and business development at GTS, said: “Ciena’s converged packet optical technology allows us to provide capacity and latency improvements to our international networks, and support bandwidth-intensive services and enterprise applications.”

Demand from growing CEE economies for managed cloud solutions, VPNs and voice and data services are creating a larger need for capacity in the region. Earlier this year, rival regional operator Telekom Austria Group also launched its 100G network in CEE.

Nick Walden, regional managing director of northern Europe at Ciena said: “As a long-term partner to GTS, we have experienced with them the increasing need for high-capacity networks in the Central and Eastern European region. Future-proofing for this demand requires not only additional capacity, but also a cost-efficient infrastructure that enables telecom operators to support the service offerings their customers demand.”
