Liquid Telecom partners with Ekinops for network expansion

Pan-African wholesale provider Liquid Telecom has partnered with French vendor Ekinops to complete the roll out of its long-haul DWDM network across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

The network spans more than 2,500km and is said to be the longest uninterrupted fibre spanning the continent. It can carry multiple 10G wavelengths and is said to be scalable to support more 10G and 100G services.

Commenting on the move, Nic Rudnick, CEO of Liquid Telecom, said: “We choose to build and own our fibre networks in Africa wherever possible, and we trust Ekinops to help us cross the massive distances found in this continent.”

Liquid already has one of the largest fibre networks across Africa, spanning more than 13,000 km across Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, DRC, Lesotho, and South Africa. It claims its network is the first to cross country borders and bring connectivity to markets previously not served with fixed-line infrastructure.

Last month, Liquid completed the acquisition of Rwanda’s fixed-line network operator Rwandatel.
