Local firms bid for 4G licences in Taiwan

According to local reports, seven local companies are said to have made bids for Taiwan’s 4G mobile spectrum licences.

Among the bidders is said to be Hon Hai, one of the world’s largest electronics contract manufacturers, which is responsible for the assembly of Apple’s iPhones and iPads.

Hon Hai reportedly lodged the application through Ambit Microsystems, one of 26 companies affiliated with the organisation, which is focussed on providing telecoms solutions and connectivity.

Capacity is unable to confirm whether the country’s leading telecoms operator, Chungwa Telecom, is yet to have submitted a bid, but according to local reports it is pursuing plans to complete its 4G infrastructure by the end of next year.

Taiwan lags significantly behind some other Asian markets with its 4G roll out. Some sources state the spectrum sale will get underway in September.
