Czech Republic sets conditions for mobile spectrum auction

Czech telecoms regulator CTU has set out conditions for a mobile spectrum auction to allow for a new operator to enter the market.

The regulator has set aside two 10MHz blocs in the 800MHz band for a new company to enter the market and compete with the country’s existing three operators.

The auction is scheduled for the end of July, with European countries now stepping up investments to rollout superfast mobile networks based on LTE and 4G technology.

There is reportedly huge demand in Czech Republic for next-generation networks, and customers in the country have been complaining about a lack of competition in the market.

PPF Mobile Services is expected to be the fourth bidder in the auction, according to Reuters, which operates as a unit of the PPF investment group. It is owned by Petr Kellner, Czech Republic’s richest man.

The CTU suspended its previous auction in March due to a rise in bids over $1 billion which the regulator claimed threatened competitive pricing and speed to market.
