Ooredoo doubles 4G coverage

Ooredoo, formerly Qatar Telecom, has doubled its 4G coverage in the country, with the activation of 200 LTE sites.

The company is rolling out the service in phases, with coverage initially available in and around Doha, the country’s capital.

Customers using the LTE network are expected to benefit from a “speed of life” connection, according to a statement on the company’s website; which is said to be up to six times faster than on the existing 3G network.

Plans are reportedly in place to deploy 4G services to Wakrah, Al Khor and Dukhan by Ramadan this year, which begins in the second week of July, and to the majority of urban Qatar by the end of 2014.

Ooredoo appears to be looking at extending its global 3G and 4G footprint, as the roll-out in Qatar follows reports earlier this month that the company would invest $15 billion in a 3G network in Myanmar, should it be successful in the upcoming spectrum auction.
