BT seals deal with Staffordshire for broadband connectivity

BT has signed a deal with the Staffordshire county council to deliver high-speed fibre broadband to the majority of the county.

The deal, worth an estimated £27.35 million, is expected to see the roll-out of fibre broadband to over 472,000 businesses and homes, with 97% of the county benefitting from the service by Spring 2016.

Funding will be divided between the Broadband Delivery UK (BDUK) initiative, Staffordshire county council and BT; split £7.44 million, £7.44 million and £12.47 million respectively.

“We see this infrastructure as important as road or rail in providing the accessibility and opportunities for our residents and businesses,” said Mark Winnington, cabinet member for economy and infrastructure for Staffordshire county council.

“It will ensure we can compete with other areas of the UK and Europe.”

BDUK guidelines state that in three years, 90% of UK premises will have access to fibre broadband, and the government has allocated £530 million to hit this target.

Yesterday, BT announced the successful trial of 800G on its core infrastructure with Ciena, further highlighting its commitment to high-speed connectivity.
