ARSAT and Alcatel-Lucent strike 100G deal in Argentina

Argentinean operator ARSAT has partnered with Alcatel-Lucent for the deployment of a nationwide 100G fibre-optic network in the country.

The deployment is expected to enable high-capacity data communications on a route between Buenos Aires and Mendoza, and a second route running from Rio Gallegos to Ushuaia.

“We are pleased to work with ARSAT to provide our leading Agile Optical Networking 100G technology which offers a flexible, cost-effective solution for the transportation of high-bandwidth data,” said Marcelo Entreconti, leader of strategic industries for South America at Alcatel-Lucent.

The fibre-optic links are designed to deliver internet and data connectivity, initially in major cities in the country, allowing schools and institutions to utilise learning facilities and other online services.

ARSAT hopes that upon completion, 97% of the Argentinean population will benefit from high-speed internet access.

The contract is valued at approximately $7.3million and states that Alcatel-Lucent will provide its services for five years.

“To date we’ve deployed 100G transport solutions in 90 networks in over 45 countries,” Entreconti added.

Alcatel-Lucent signed an agreement with du earlier this year, to build the second phase of its 100G optical network in UAE.
