The Hong-Kong based company will launch the PoP this month, with the view of addressing a range of wholesale services, including MPLS, IPLC and IPVPN services.
HGC claims it stands as the only company to date to partner with MPT in the country for data services, and serves as Myanmar’s major IP backbone provider for internet services.
As Myanmar’s telecoms market gears up for its long awaited spectrum auction, HGC ‘s president of international business, Andrew Kwok, told Capacity the company has now been providing telecoms services to Myanmar since 2008, and it has now revamped its business model and services in response to increasing deregulation.
“We have been providing Myanmar with access to telecoms services for five years to connect the country to international markets in some way,” said Kwok.
“It was important to look at the role we would play in the future, considering the deregulation and this PoP indicates further development.”
The new PoP is designed to provide robust voice and data capability, and creates a redundant network on both terrestrial and subsea cable, intended to support diversified routes and low latency, connecting Myanmar beyond Asia, and to the rest of the world.
“Many companies are planning to improve Myanmar’s international infrastructure, but I don’t believe they are going the same pace as we are,” said Kwok.
“Installing a PoP like this requires a range of different routing agreements on numerous terrestrial and submarine cables, to a service level standard. Through our collaboration with MPT, I believe we are ahead of our competition.”
Kwok told Capacity that HGC, like many other international operators, have played an important role in advising regulators on the best approach to take to open up the market, and said its development was now ahead of schedule.
HGC confirmed it is also open to the idea of providing additional capacity and wholesale services to whichever company wins the licence auction - due to close on June 27 this year.
“We don’t rule out the possibility of working with whichever international operator is successful, but we reiterate that our main partner in the country will remain as MPT.”
HGC said it had received permission from MPT to operate international data and voice services in the country since September last year.
