BBG signs Alcatel-Lucent for submarine cable

The Bay of Bengal Gateway (BBG) consortium has selected Alcatel-Lucent to construct its undersea cable system.

BBG has contracted Alcatel-Lucent to develop the high capacity cable to meet the demand of continued growth of applications and services in Middle East, Indian sub-continent and the Far East.

The consortium comprises of Vodafone, Dialog Axiata, Etisalat, Reliance Jio Infocomm, Omantel and Telekom Malaysia and BBG has signed the vendor to provide the infrastructure for its 100Gbps system.

Alcatel-Lucent will also manage system design, marine operations and system commissioning once operational.

The submarine cable system is scheduled to be operational by late 2014 and will feature landing points for connectivity in Oman, UAE, Mumbai and Chennai in India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia’s Penang and Singapore.

Philippe Dumont, president of Alcatel-Lucent Submarine Networks, said the vendor would provide solutions that will help the consortium “flexibly and reliably manage bandwidth expansion on-demand”.

Alcatel-Lucent has also been selected by Middle East operator du to build the second phase of its 100G optical network in UAE.
