NTT opens Tokyo data centre

NTT Communications has opened what it claims to be Tokyo's largest data centre.

The operator launched the Tokyo data centre under its network services brand Nexcenter in an effort to meet demand for increasing ICT and contingency services in case of natural disasters.

The new data centre covers 22,000sqm and is said to offer disaster-resistant services across its 3,000 racks.

Plans to start building a Malaysian data centre in the city of Cyberjaya have also been announced by the Japanese operator, which is scheduled to be operational by May 2014.

Growth in the South East Asian market has accelerated plans and the company is set to use the NTT's part owned Asia Submarine-cable Express which connects Malaysia to China, Philippines and Japan.

"Malaysia is well positioned to be a world-class preferred hub for data centres," said Fumitoshi Imaizumi, CEO of NTT Malaysian subsidiary NTT MSC.

"Liberal investment policies by the government, solid infrastructure and a large supply of people with IT expertise and multilingual talents offer clear advantages for foreign investors, particularly in terms of disaster recovery and offshore relocation."
