Ericsson selected by Cellular One for 3G upgrade

Ericsson has been selected by US rural wireless service provider Cellular One to upgrade its network to 3G.

The upgrade is hoped to result in increased coverage in previously underserved areas, with some receiving a 4G upgrade.

Ericsson is also expected to double the number of Cellular One’s base stations.

"Increased data speed and coverage has become an essential part of the networked society where we live," said Craig Stein, head of broadband and media accounts at Ericsson.

"Ericsson takes pride in leading the way into this new generation of connectivity and is excited to work with Cellular One as it extends its network, speed and the benefits of mobile broadband to its customers."

Cellular One only recently acquired the radio spectrum for the roll-out of 3G and 4G services, and is said to be aggressively focussing on its expansion plan throughout northeast Arizona and New Mexico.

“This expansion plan will consolidate [our] position and ensure our customers are receiving the world-class service that they deserve," said Louise Finnegan, CEO at Cellular One.

"This is the most aggressive build out plan that the company has ever undertaken and in evaluating the best partner to undertake this project with, we looked for a company that is a technology world-leader, has immaculate credentials worldwide and provides the best service and security for Cellular One and its customers. Ericsson was the obvious choice."

Ericssson most recently partnered with Wataniya Telecom to upgrade its radio access network.
