iFiber selects Ciena to deploy platform solutions across north Illinois

Illinois Fiber Resources Group (iFiber) has selected network specialist Ciena to deploy its platform solutions throughout north western Illinois.

The move is hoped to address the Illinois-based company’s concerns over slow internet speeds particularly in the northern part of the state. Ethernet service delivery is expected to increase to 100G following Ciena’s implementation.

iFiber will deploy Ciena’s converged packet optical and packet networking platforms to serve 80 public safety buildings and 100 government facilities, in addition to 533 buildings, which are said to be vital for economic stability.

John Lewis, chairman of the board of directors at iFiber, said: “We intend to bring economic development and information exchange to businesses, community anchors and residents in northern Illinois at speeds not possible with the existing infrastructure.”

iFiber is funded through Broadband Technology Opportunity Program’s infrastructure grant as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Signed by President Obama in February 2009, the act attributed $7.2 billion to ensure complete broadband and wireless internet access nationwide.
