Level 3 names new wholesale chief

Level 3 Communications has announced Gary Breauninger, formerly of Global Crossing, is to head up its wholesale segment following a management restructure.

Breauninger told Capacity of his excitement at taking a role in “one of the most exciting segments in telecoms today”.

Breauninger outlined his desire to secure the role as soon as it became available, particularly because of the opportunities that now lie in the business as a result of end user demand for bandwidth.

“Wholesale is no longer the old business because it’s getting a lot more interesting. As the legacy voice business declines we are seeing growth in long-haul Ethernet, metro Ethernet and a continued growth in VPN, which is all largely coming from the higher end of end user demand,” he said. “Level 3 has made appropriate acquisitions in this space, and through asset deployment, wholesale remains a major growth market for us, particularly in enabling carriers to connect to Europe and Latin America.”

Taking on the role of group VP for wholesale sales, Breauninger has over 23 years experience in the telecoms market, and previously held positions as CFO for wholesale at Global Crossing, in addition to spending 10 years at AT&T in sales operations and finance, both on the enterprise and wholesale side.

Level 3 announced it would take over Global Crossing over 18 months ago, and Breauninger told Capacity that both companies partook in a rigorous integration process, which is now nearing completion. “I’d give us an A minus for how well we integrated,” he said. “The synergies, we are seeing, now continue to grow and I’m sure people would say we could’ve done things a bit better, but right now we are in good shape moving forward.”

Watch out for Capacity’s big interview with Gary Breauninger in the April/May issue of Capacity magazine.
