MTN says Boko Haram militia still a “threat” to its Nigerian infrastructure

An MTN Nigeria spokesman has said the company still fear attacks by local militia group Boko Haram.

MTN and Airtel owned infrastructure was attacked last September, which resulted in 10 masts being burnt to the ground. Base stations were also damaged in Maiduguri by men on motorbikes.

Public relations manager Funso Aina told local reporters that MTN was “still taking stock” of the total cost of Boko Haram’s attack.

"The threat of attack on telecommunication installations by terrorists in Northern Nigeria is still a clear and present danger,” Aina said.

"But the government at all levels and security agencies are trying their best to forestall further attacks," MTN removed 500 base stations from its network in 2012 after they were targeted by the militia.

Boko Haram, a jihadist militant organisation based in the northeast of Nigeria, is targeting MTN, Airtel, Globacom, Etisalat and Nigerian Telecommunications Limited facilities because of the telecoms companies’ continued support of Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan.
