Bangladesh begins VoIP licence roll-out

The Bangladeshi telecoms regulator has begun handing over VoIP licences to operators.

The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) chairman issued the licences to organisations across the telecoms ecosystem for the services, and opened up the country for international calling through VoIP services for the first time.

Local reports state that there are over 1004 firms approved for licences, and 844 have paid their fees, with licences only being issued to those who have paid.

The BTRC initially invited applications by issuing VoIP guidelines on its website, and 1500 companies’ submitted interest. According to analysts, Bangladesh receives between 55 and 60 million minutes of VoIP calls a day.
