Alcatel-Lucent upgrades connectivity for US healthcare provider

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) has selected Alcatel-Lucent to help deliver data, video and voice services to its hospitals.

Alcatel-Lucent is said to be supplying UPMC with its 7950 XRS core router and 100G solutions to upgrade its IT network and leverage large set of complex data.

The services will reportedly be delivered to over 20 hospitals, 3,400 doctors and more than 55,000 employees across Western Pennsylvania.

“The ‘big data’ needs of large-scale enterprises such as UPMC are breaking down the barriers between traditional IT systems and communications networks,” said Michel Emelianoff, president of Alcatel-Lucent Enterprise.

“This project with UPMC offers a great example of how advanced IP and fibre-optic technologies can enhance the operations of enterprises in a wide array of fields.”

The agreement is also expected to include Alcatel-Lucent’s proprietary optical coherent technology, the 1830 Photonic Service Switch (PSS).
