TOT to launch 3G services

TOT, Thailand’s state-owned telco, is said to be launching its portfolio of 3G services at the end of this week.

TOT has claimed it will offer the 3G services at 2G prices from February 22 2013, starting at 299 baht a month for two gigabytes of data, or 899 baht per month for the unlimited package.

According to Yongyuth Wattanasin, president of TOT, the 3G service will initially run on 4,063 base stations with a view to increasing to 5,300 in April.

“We will also launch a 4G trial on our existing 2100-megahertz frequency before this Friday at 100 sites," he said.

TOT has signed contracts with Samart i-Mobile, Loxley, IEC Technology, 365 Communication and M Consult to provide first-phase service as MVNOs, and the 4G LTE trial follows a proposition from Samart, according to local reports.

In the coming year, TOT reportedly plans to initiate its second phase of 3G and expand its fibre-optic nationwide network to 420,000 ports.

The 3G roll-out follows TOT's partnership with two local Thai operators in September last year.
