Vodacom Tanzania launches LTE trial

Vodacom Tanzania has launched an LTE trial in Dar es Salaam through Nokia Siemens Networks.

The trial will cover the Msasani Peninsular, with the company confirming it is in talks with regulators to deploy the service countrywide.

Vodacom Tanzania’s managing director Rene Meza told local reporters it was in talks with the Tanzanian Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) regarding the allocation of spectrum for LTE to be rolled out across the country.

In Germany and Korea for example, spectrum in the 800MHz and 1800MHz bands allow for more coverage and cost efficient deployment of LTE services, across a range of devices. It is thought this is what the company is looking to offer.

NSN provides Vodacom Tanzania with a voice calling system, enabling LTE smartphones to fall back on GSM and 3G networks when LTE coverage is unavailable.

The company is also enabling NetAct network management system to allow for the consolidated monitoring, management and operation of Tanzania’s initial trial network.
