Maxis claims first 4G LTE launch in Malaysia

Malaysia’s Maxis is claiming to be the first operator to launch 4G LTE services in the country.

The carrier’s 4G LTE services are now available in select parts of the Klang Valley, Taman Tun Dr Ismail, Damansara Utama, Desa Sri Hartamas, Bandar Puchong Jaya, Bandar Sunway and Cyberjaya with plans to increase coverage “very soon”, according to Digital News Asia.

Maxis said that its 4G network would offer speeds of up to 75Mbps and average speeds of 10 to 30Mbps.

"This represents a crucial milestone in Maxis’ integrated journey," Maxis’ chief executive officer Sandip Das said. "4G LTE operates at download speeds 5-10 times faster than 3G, and will enable and sustain a seamless experience of rich content across our high-speed fixed and wireless network platforms."

Das also referred to the possibility of super-fast internet access outside of fibre broadband, made possible by the LTE network.

To prepare for the launch Maxis had been conducting 4G LTE trials for two years and carried out interworking tests in live network environments.
