Terrestrial developments key for new subsea cable projects

The success of new subsea cable projects hinges on their integration with terrestrial developments, according to several senior representatives from leading subsea cable operators.

They believe that any project that is able to demonstrate that it is tied in with well-planned terrestrial development at its end point is likely to experience greater success in the market.

Seaborn Networks is constructing a new cable between Brazil and the US. The company’s CEO, Larry Schwartz, said the new route is supported by “unprecedented terrestrial developments in mobile, 4G, at metro level, in data centres and broadband penetration”.

“It is a route that by 2015 will need additional capacity and probably needs more than one new cable other than ours,” he added.

Israeli company Bezeq International, which operates the JONAH cable connecting Tel Aviv with Bari in Italy, has been expanding its domestic infrastructure to support the route.

“As the largest player in the ISP market in Israel, we had an interest in opening the international telecoms market in Israel to competition,” said Maya Glick, senior project director at Bezeq International.
