Pacnet to develop fifth Chinese data centre

Asian carrier Pacnet is to develop its fifth data centre in China and it will launch in early 2014.

The company has signed an agreement with the Tianjin Wuging Government to jointly develop a data centre in the Wuging district in Tianjin, China.

As part of the agreement, Pacnet’s equity joint venture in China, Pacnet Business Solutions (China) and the government will build and operate a data centre capable of hosting 2,000 racks, making it one of the company’s largest facilities.

“We believe our strong international presence coupled with our local China expertise will enable us to support Tianjin’s development into a key technology hub in north China,” said Carl Grivner, CEO at Pacnet.

Officials from MIIT, Tianjin Economic and Information Technology Commission, Wuging District Government and Pacnet were present at the signing ceremony held today.

Xie Zhigang, director of cloud research at MIIT, drew on Pacnet’s commitment to meet international standards for sustainability and efficiency as further reasons for the partnership. “This will support the latest efforts by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology to promote the development of green data centres in China.”

According to Pacnet, the facility is designed to cater demand for both data centres and managed services for Chinese and foreign enterprises. Construction will cost approximately $72 million, and begin in early 2013.

The development builds on Pacnet’s recently announced strategic initiatives to expand on its Chinese network and range of services in the country.
