Turkcell places bid for Bulgaria’s Globul

Turkcell has placed a preliminary bid to acquire Cosmote Bulgaria Mobile, Globul, Bulgaria’s second largest mobile operator.

The Turkish carrier said in a statement to the Istanbul Stock Exchange that it had placed the non-binding bid as it explores investment opportunities in the region.

Globul wielded 35.8% wireless subscriber market share in June 2012, behind MobilTel with 45.4% and ahead of Vivacom with 18.8%, according to TeleGeography.

The operator’s owner, Greek incumbent OTE, confirmed in June that it was looking to divest the unit and Turkcell was quickly linked with the sale.

This was due to Turkcell’s previous interest in acquiring troubled Bulgarian telco Vivacom, in a deal that fell through earlier this year.
