Etisalat highlights opportunity in digital services

Etisalat’s chief digital services officer predicts the value of the digital entertainment industry in the Middle East and North Africa could exceed $3 billion by 2015.

Speaking at a conference today in Dubai, Khalifa Al Shamsi said that although operators “need to protect their core voice and access services, they also need to realise that digital services is a growth opportunity”.

He said that Etisalat had its own dedicated unit to launch innovations in the digital entertainment and core services sectors, including solutions that support healthcare and M2M capability.

Shamsi added the growth of digital entertainment contained a potential threat for certain telecoms services, but represents a great opportunity for companies the size of Etisalat.

“Operators like us have significant assets and resources that can be activated to support internet companies and other players in a win-win partnership, or to develop competitive services in their own right.”

Etisalat has identified growth forecasts in a range of different digital services, and it expects to achieve growth in numerous areas including mobile advertising, financial services, cloud computing and M2M.
