The connection comes as a result of a community project led by the Economic and Monetary Union West Africa (UEMOA), according to Agence Ecofin.
It was deployed in cooperation with Burkina’s Onatel and Niger’s Sonitel and is designed to meet the growing service demand and to reduce the cost of internet and telephony.
The route will also serve as a backup in case of a failure of the fibre connection linking access to the SAT3 cable via Benin.
The project was originally initiated in 2000 but then put on hold until 2009 when a meeting of ministers from Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger recognised the importance of the connection for regional and international broadband connectivity.
