Pierre Louette, deputy chief executive at France Telecom, and the head of the country’s main industry group, told local press that tax increases in the country meant it was becoming harder for operators to lower prices and invest in high-speed networks.
“I won’t be surprised if 4G is more expensive,” he said. “The sector could return to tiered offers with higher prices for faster services."
The emergence of Free Mobile in the French market, early this year, which offers significantly lower tariffs for consumers, has meant there has been an intense price war between main operators in the country.
Before this, the French market was regarded as one of the most expensive mobile industries in Europe.
According to Reuters, France Telecom is planning to start offering 4G services to French consumers early next year.
