Belgacom to provide KPN access to VDSL2 network

Belgian operators Belgacom and KPN Group Belgium have entered into a five-year agreement under which Belgacom will provide KPN with access to its VDSL2 broadband network.

The agreement will enable KPN Belgium to upgrade and expand its fixed portfolio and comes in anticipation of demand for fixed services. KPN said it also expects to launch new products to its customers as a result of the agreement.

KPN sold its Belgian enterprise and wholesale businesses in the fixed market to Mobistar in 2010.

The Dutch carrier is still active in the Belgian mobile market through its operator BASE, having been unsuccessful in an attempt to sell the company earlier this year.

The agreement can be seen as an attempt by KPN to gain ground on rivals Mobistar, Belgacom and Telenet, which all offer bundled fixed and mobile services.
