Reliance Globalcom upgrades European network to 100G

Reliance Globalcom, the wholesale arm of the Reliance Group, has announced it is upgrading its European network with coherent 100G technology.

The move has been taken with the view of supporting high bandwidth applications and addressing high-speed data demands in the region.

Its network, which connects London, Paris, Marseilles and Frankfurt, will be upgraded to 100G wavelength technology by the end of 2012, deploying Ciena’s optlical platform and WaveLogic processors.

Reliance said, as a result of the upgrade, it will be able to support high bandwidth applications in cloud, video conferencing, disaster recovery and storage area network, in addition to coping better with increasing internet traffic.

“The 100G deployment will enable significant bandwidth scalability, flexibility and improved performance, while reducing the overall costs for our customers”, said Punit Garg, president & CEO of Reliance Globalcom.

“Last year Reliance Globalcom had installed Ciena's 6500 platform with 40G technology on its European terrestrial backhaul network. Now 100G technology will be added to the existing network so that 40G and 100G channels run along the same fibre allowing us to support the delivery of next-generation services to our customers.”

100G technology will enable the company to send 2.5 times more data over its fibre network that presently operates 40G. Reliance said this will decrease the overall cost per terabit on the network.
