Unnamed sources have told Polish daily Puls Biznesu that América Móvil is one of four companies considering an investment in Hawe. The other three are described as another telecoms company and two private equity funds.
Hawe, which is valued at $122 million, is looking to raise funds to acquire the telecoms arm of Poland’s railway network.
The company owns an extensive Polish backbone network, with more than 3,300km of fibre, and operates on a wholesale business model as a carrier’s carrier.
Slim has expressed an interest in the Polish market previously, having eyed an acquisition of Polish mobile operator Polkomtel. The publication said that he may now target Polish operator P4, which is ranked fourth in terms of subscriber share in the domestic mobile market.
América Móvil has already taken advantage of lower valuations in the European market to establish a foothold in the region, with the acquisition of stakes in both Dutch carrier KPN and Telekom Austria Group.
This latest speculation comes despite América Móvil's co-chairman Slim Domit telling newswire Reuters this month that the company had no other European transactions on the radar.
