South African telecoms market to experience slow growth until 2017

A report from Pyramid Research forecasts South Africa’s telecoms market will grow slowly at a CAGR of 2%, from $17.8 billion in 2012 to $19.6 billion in 2017.

The most significant growth in the market is expected to come from mobile data and fixed VoIP services, with mobile data revenue projected to more than double from $2.4 billion in 2011 to $6.8 billion by 2017.

VoIP is set to become increasingly popular as innovations like cross-border VoIP allow consumers to beat roaming charges.

Mobile was the most dominant sector in 2011, generating $13.4 billion in revenue, but is expected to follow a similar trend as competition increases among operators, particularly in the voice sector.

The arrival of the West Africa Cable System (WACS) is expected to help operators provide enhanced broadband internet services at more affordable prices.
