Digicel acquires Comcel

Pan Caribbean operator Digicel has acquired Haitian mobile operator Comcel which operates under the Voilà brand, from Trilogy International Partners.

Colm Delves, Digicel Group CEO, said; “Digicel’s acquisition of Voilà will see mobile users across Haiti benefiting from increased investment in even better mobile services and new technology in the future.”

As part of the agreement the two operators will continue to be run separately in Haiti. A similar clause was initially applied to Digicel’s acquisition of Claro’s Jamaican operations last year, where it was also in a dominant market position.

This clause was later removed, enabling Digicel to shut down Claro’s Jamaican network and migrate Claro customers to its own network, or that of its competitor LIME.

Digicel is Haiti’s largest operator with 64.6% market share in December 2011. The company launched in Haiti in 2005 and has since invested over $600 million in its network.

Comcel was previously Digicel’s main competitor in Haiti with a 21.6% market share in December 2011. Following Comcel’s acquisition, Digicel’s largest competitor in Haiti will be Natcom, which has only a 10.9% market share.
