BTC launches 4G in the Bahamas

Cable & Wireless Communications’ Caribbean business, the Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC), has launched a 4G HSPA+ network.

The network is a significant upgrade for the islands, which previously only had access to 2G mobile services. Mobile broadband services have also been launched with the HSPA+ network, allowing internet access on the islands, without fixed-line or WiFi, for the first time.

“For both Bahamians, and the tourists on which this economy depends, this is another significant step forward in the modernisation of the telecommunications infrastructure for these islands,” said Geoff Houston, CEO for BTC.

CWC purchased a majority shareholding in BTC last year from the government of the Bahamas. The deal gave CWC a 51% stake in BTC for $210 million and also allowed the company three years of exclusivity in the market before it is opened to competition.

This latest launch is part of a wider introduction of 4G HSPA+ services in CWC’s Caribbean businesses.
