Azteca wins tender to build fibre-optic network in Colombia

Azteca, one of the largest producers of Spanish television programming in the world has announced that the company has won the money to build and operate a fibre-optic network in Colombia.

The network will cover approximately 80% of Colombia and is designed to serve 40 million Colombians. The project includes the installation of the network and the commercialisation of services for homes and offices in 753 municipalities.

The Colombian Government is providing approximately $230 million for the construction of the network in the municipalities. According to local sources the government is also applying a subsidy to ensure that the most important services for access to the internet are available at reasonable prices to all.

Colombia has been expanding its telecoms capabilities vastly in recent months. UK telecoms giant BT recently launched a data centre in Bogota the Colombian capital.
