US gains 3.4 million broadband users in 2010

The 19 largest cable and telephone providers in the US added 3.4 million to their high-speed internet subscribers last year.

Leichtman Research Group found the annual net broadband additions in 2010 were 83% of the total in 2009. The top broadband providers account for 75.1 million broadband subscribers with cable companies holding 41.5 million, and telephone companies 33.5 million.

The top cable companies added 2.3 million broadband subscribers in 2010, equalling 98% of the total net additions in 2009; while the top telephone companies added 1.1 million broadband subscribers, or 62% of the total net additions in 2009.

In Q4 2010, cable and telephone providers added 840,000 broadband subscribers, of which 515,000 were added by the cable companies and 325,000 were added by the telephone providers.
