Reader profile: Tad Deriso

Tad Deriso is president and CEO of the Mid-Atlantic Broadband Cooperative (MBC), a not-for-profit organisation that has built an advanced open-access fibre-optic network in Southern Virginia.

Working in the telecoms industry for over 20 years, Deriso has become an “avid reader” of Capacity magazine since forming MBC in 2005

“I always turn straight to the news and views section. It’s helpful to us as a smaller regional wholesale transport provider to see what other carriers are doing. We read about the trends in new services, networks and business deals, which help identify opportunities for MBC.

As a regional wholesale optical transport provider in smaller tier markets, we are always interested when articles focus on the issue of reaching rural markets – particularly reading about how operators are solving backbone networks in developing countries, and where the wholesale telecoms industry is addressing large bandwidth and transport needs from data centres and media companies. We live and breathe those issues every day, and it is refreshing to see the insights and strategies of how other carriers are tackling those issues.

Reading about the latest trends and developments in the wholesale industry is important for us to keep MBC on the forefront of thought leaders. We travel extensively for meetings with our members, participating in industry conferences, recruiting data centre prospects to our region, and talking about the benefits of open-access wholesale networks. Through it all, I always carry the latest issue of Capacity to read on the plane. It helps me generate new ideas about how MBC can provide world-class wholesale transport services to rural markets.”
